Hints & Tips

The Warne Pocket Series were all published with a pictoral cover and had either a dust jacket on them or were laminated

Dust Jackets

Every title up until the early 70’s were published with a dust jacket. These had pictorial designs on them which changed over the years. As the books were meant to be carried around with you the jackets were very prone to extreme wear and tear and gradually the ended ut with tears, creases, grubby finger stains and pen/pencil marks on them. To get a mint condition dust wrapper on an early edition is becoming harder and harder.

Towards the end of the 1960’s many dust jackets were given a glossy laminated coating to make them a bit more stronger and wear resistant.

This process was extended to all titles from the 1970’s along with a new design with no dust jacket at all. These editions had the pictures etc printed directly on to the book binding and laminated to make them very robust

In the late 1970’s some titles had special advertising dust jackets on them from a company advertising herbicide products. They’ve become known as tye Cyanamids and are becoming very rare as time goes on.

Once your collection is underway the most important thing is to look after your books. Condition is everything, especially the Dust Jacket.

The best way to protect the Dust Jackets is to use clear plastic sleeving. Either make your own or obtain them from book suppliers. Do NOT use the clear sticky backed type, it will ruin your Dust Jacket and make it worthless.

For storage if you intend to display them ensure they are away from direct sunlight. You know doubt will come across books which have the lettering on the spine almost faded to invisible. This is a direct result of the book being left on a shelf which gets a lot of sunshine on it.

Books which look tanned have probably been in a smokers house. Not a good sign. (both for the book and the smoker)

Do not pile your books on top of each other as it will cause the spines to weaken. If you must store them that way then alternate the pile to help spread the weight.
